  4.        SUMMER'93 CONVERTS SUMMER '87 CODE INTO CLIPPER 5

  7.      Summer'93 was produced in response to the Clipper developers'
  8. need to convert Summer '87 code into Clipper 5.0 and later code.
  9. This allows older Summer '87 applications to take advantage of the
  10. increased efficiencies of statically-scoped code, RDD's, code blocks
  11. and all third party products.
  12.  
  13.      Summer'93 handles nearly all of the translation processes,
  14. from changing comment characters to passing variables down to
  15. function calling chains. The user has control over the layout of
  16. the generated source code and the naming of the output modules.
  17. After translation to Clipper 5 through Summer'93, the code
  18. contains few or no dynamic variables and macros.  This allows the
  19. program to load smaller and run faster.

  21.      Summer'93 eliminates the Summer '87 Public and Private
  22. storage types, replacing them with statically scoped equivalents.
  23. Old Private variables that belong in a function up the calling
  24. chain may be passed as parameters.  Each Public variable precisely
  25. emulates the scope of the old Public variable without its runtime
  26. overhead.  "STORE...TO" is replaced with multiple assignments and
  27. procedure declarations are recast eliminating the old "PARAMETERS"
  28. keyword.
